Gesture Sound

In fall of 2010, I began my senior thesis research. I'm working with Roy Campbell and Guy Garnett, studying how touch surfaces can create new music instrument interfaces. My research, tentatively titled Gesture Sound, explores the use of continuous gestures to manipulate audio.

Continuous gestures are the continuous classification of touches over time. This differs from the typical classification approach to gestures, where at the end of the gesture, a single value is returned. This poses extra challenges, but makes it particularly suitable for use in music performance. Some of the topics I've researched while achiving this were Kalman Filtering, Bezier Curves, and Multilayer Perceptrons. Currently, I am in the process of writing my research paper on utilizing the Weka library to train a set of instruments.
